Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Slave
shackles. Bronze. Western African Craft. 17th – 19th century.
Large ankle bracelet, made up of two concentric welded elements with simple geometrical decoration and parallel lines which covers the whole external surface. Hollow and quite light, it has a significant longitudinal fissure, probably to allow the insertion of spheroids or small stones. This type of shackles was put on the slaves to stop them from escaping, made difficult by the heaviness and by the clanking of the object.
