Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Royal couple.
Bronze. Kingdom of Benin. 18th - 19th century
Royal couple with rich ornaments identifying the rank. The king is portrayed armed with a lance and a sword, the queen has an elaborate hairstyle and plaits and several bracelets. The bronze statues with the lost wax technique provide one of the typical productions of the court art of the kingdoms of Benin. The rushed and stylistically heavy design of the two finds induces us to consider it as belonging to the final phase of the kingdom (18th – 19th century), if not to a moment after its decline.
