Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Plaque.
Bronze. Kingdom of Benin. 16th - 17th century
Bronze plaque with representation of the king (Oba) and three dignitaries, of which two surround it and support it. The lower limbs of the royal figure are laterally elongated, ending with two herpetic protomes.
Similar iconography seems extremely rare. Indeed, we are aware of only one other bronze plaque in which the king assumes the divine forms of the python, exhibited in 1962 in Munich and photographed by Herbert List.
