Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Statue of king.
Wood. D’ngese art. 19th – 20th century
The statue proposes the stylised figure of a royal ancestor, in the typical iconography of the D’ngese ethnos from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The long body is covered by complex and orderly geometrical motifs which represent the ritual scarifications, identifying relations between the sovereign and their subjects; the headwear, curved cone shaped surmounted by a plume, is an element identifying the rank and symbolises the supremacy of the king and the unity of the tribal heads.
