Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Elek mask. Baga
Art. Wood. 19th – 20th century
Mask on foot or composite, typical production of the Baga ethnos, a small population of fishermen and farmers stationed in Guinea. Overall it has the shape, made with carving or excision, of the Elek bird (African ibis), with stylised features of the human face on the back and of the mouth of a crocodile at the lateral caudal end. This combination expressed the indissoluble link of man with the forces of the earth and the heavens.
Now extremely rare, the Elek mask was used in the initiation rites of the secret society Simo and during the funeral ceremonies of high ranking people.
