Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology "Decio de Lorentiis". Colony of rudists,
Altamura Limestones. Upper Cretaceous period. 98-65 million years.
At the end of the Cretaceous period, the Salento carbonate platform began to be formed, it was colonised by bioconstructing bivalve molluscs, called rudists, which became extinct 65 million years ago. In this block of Altamura limestone about sixty holes about 20 cm long and with a diameter of between 1 and 2.5 cm can be seen, where the rudists were housed.
